How Do You Recognize When It Is Time To Replace Your Old Hiking Boots
Well, back when you bought your last pair of waterproof hiking boots,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which you love very much because they've provided you with lots of excellent, comfortable mileage over the years, things were a little bit different. Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you had a lot of fun and enjoyment on your outdoor outings over the years but now those old reliable hiking boots are starting to look a bit rusty. Actually, they're starting to look a lot rusty but you're not sure whether or not you should hang on to them or start looking for another pair that can be just as reliable and last another however many years.
Since you bought them the old hikers have actually seemed like they were one of your family members and it kind of hurts but still, it may be time to let them die a dignified death and think about something more modern with maybe a few more features. But how do you know when it's time to say goodbye?
You might want to start out with the sole. The sole is actually the "soul" of the shoe (perfect pun, I know) and it provides stability and traction, not to mention protection for the foot bottom. If you feel like you might not be getting the same traction you used to get when they were new, this might be your first indication of deteriorating boots. It's very important that your boots have excellent traction because when you're on slippery or wet surfaces you don't want your boot soles to be slick and unable to grab the surface. Your life and limbs could depend on this feature alone. So, if those soles seem to be slipping a bit more and by visual inspection, you're seeing a smooth, slick surface, yes, you should think seriously about replacing them. That is the first consideration. Let's move on.
Besides the traction issue, the soles also provide that layer of thickness that keeps you from feeling every single pressure point that you step on. Things such as small sticks or pebbles you hardly even know are there when the boots are new and the sole is nice and thick and stiff. But if lately, your feet are feeling more sensitive to these small mid-trail objects, you've found another reason to replace the old dogs. You sure don't want to feel all the stuff you're walking over or you'll never make a mile on the trail. If those soles are thinning out, you're going to start having sore and aching feet after all your hikes and that just won't do, will it?
Should there come a time when you have to cross shallow water areas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as streams or creeks (or worse) or if when you're traversing along the side of a hill or mountain, you'll want to be sure that your scree collar is working well when you tighten the laces. If, lately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you've been pulling your laces tight but you're still getting lots of debris and water into your boots, it may be that this aspect of your boots is irreparably worn. Those scree collars may not be able to keep out all the water or debris but they can certainly help keep a lot of it out. It's miserable when you're trying to walk and every so many yards or meters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you're having to stop and empty your boot. If the scree collar padding is wearing thin, think about replacement of the boot. Scree collars are not a component that you can just replace anytime. You have to replace the entire hiking boot.
You might recall that when you initially purchased the boots and broke them in appropriately, the padding inside was cushy and comfortable. You've probably replaced the inner soles several times but even after replacing them anymore,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the shoe inner bottom may not feel soft and comfortable any more. It's probably because the sole top and innersole bottom are getting quite worn. This is another warning sign. Time to say goodbye old boys and move on.
A sure-thing sign of the need to replace the boots is when you see a lot of the threads in the seams coming loose and sticking out. When these threads break or wear out, you can take them to the shoe repair shop and they'll sew them back in for you but then you'll lose the water resistance as water will be able to seep in through the new sewn holes. Better to replace them when this occurs. Once you have to put holes in the uppers, they're done. You can still keep them around for working in the garden, etc. but they're probably useless for hikers anymore because they've lost that water resistance feature.
It's often very difficult to give up on something that has done a good job for you over the years. Shoes, boots and cars are some things that come to mind because you tend to grow close to them. However, everything has it's time and even these objects must be replaced when they are no longer effective. It's best to let your hiking boots die a dignified and smooth death than to try and get anymore out of them once they've outlived themselves.
You can bet that the new waterproof hiking boots of today have more features and those features are improved and enhanced for a better hiking experience,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Maybe it's time for you to try out a new pair and become attached to them for years (and decades) to come. There are lots of great brands of top quality hiking boots and you should be able to find a pair that works for you quite well.
So, whether it's the soles, the hiking boot footbeds, the scree collar, the uppers or anything else, make sure your waterproof hiking boots are still in good shape when you get ready to use them. Otherwise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you're better off replacing them. So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how do you know when to replace hiking boots? If you paid attention,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you'll know, no matter how much it hurts.
