Chrysler refuses to recall Jeeps despite fuel tank fire risk
WASHINGTON, June 4 () -- U.S. automaker Chrysler said Tuesday it won't recall about 2.7 million Jeeps federal officials say carry a risk of a fuel tank fire in a rear-end collision. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sent Chrysler a letter asking the automaker to voluntarily recall Jeep Grand Cherokees from 1993 through 2004 and Jeep Libertys from 2002 through 2007,Jimmy Choo handbags, NBC News reported.Chrysler responded by stating its Jeeps are safe and the company "does not intend to recall the vehicles," the network said.Chrysler said it would work to resolve the concerns registered by the NHTSA, which has been investigating the SUVs since August 2010.CNN Money reported it is the first time since 1996 an automaker has challenged an NHTSA recall demand. Chrysler was the automaker in that case, louboutin outlet, too, and won its federal court case over its seat belt system used in 91,000 cars, CNN said.At the time, Chrysler was an independent manufacturer. It now is controlled by Fiat, an Italian automaker. In the current dispute, CNN Money reported Chrysler maintains its gas tank design, which places the tank behind the rear axle, is a common practice used in many other vehicles.CNN Money said the NHTSA had no immediate comment.Washington public interest group the Center for Auto Safety said there have been 201 fire crashes with 285 deaths involving the Grand Cherokees and 36 accidents resulting in 53 deaths involving the Libertys.Chrysler says fatal accidents involving its vehicles were mostly high-speed crashes in which a different design wouldn't have changed the outcome."We believe NHTSA's initial conclusions are based on an incomplete analysis of the underlying data, and we are committed to continue working with the agency to resolve this disagreement," Chrysler said in a statement.
