Feminists would like to have fun
This week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the sardonic, voluble blogger Twisty at I Blame the Patriarchy laid into Bust magazine for being insufficiently feminist. Being both Bust and Twisty readers, we weren sure how to feel. Did we have a provocative discussion on our hands,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or perhaps a feminist pissing contest?
In the beginning, it seemed more like the second. Twisy contends that Bust is for such a wry blamer recently called feminists that is, ladies who identify as sassy sexy young urban consumers of femininity. You realize. The Grand Acquisitors. Or Carrie Bradshaw. Still, a number of Twisty criticism seems warranted; she quotes Bust editor-in-chief Debbie Stoller describing feminism as though it the broccoli that precedes dessert: course, Stoller writes, devote space within our pages to typical issues for example abortion and equal pay, but we also determined to create a truly embraceable women culture, so that reading BUST will help you feel good about being a girl.
But the critique of Bust credentials gives method to a larger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more ascetic critique of material indulgence and sexuality. Twisty lists the Bust topics she finds silly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including Marcia Brady hair, vibrators and sweetness products, and concludes that precisely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], [Bust] can make you feel better about fashion, fucking, and shopping. Pursuits that Twisty suggests are at odds with feminism purpose: printing kinds of great girly stuff BUST might be entertaining, but calling it is quite the howler. It about political action on behalf of a category of people that are culturally, socially,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], politically, intellectually,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], physically, and violently oppressed, impoverished, abused,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enslaved, objectified, raped and murdered.
Quite the battle cry, and a succinct summation of the movement raison d But Bust does cover issues of inequality; the purpose of contention appears to be the magazine also covers other, fluffier topics. The question is whether fashion, fucking and shopping disqualify one from the feminist movement. Or, put one other way: Is fun antifeminist?
Some would say yes, that going inside a thousand yards of traditional femininity helps shore up the status quo, and that should you enjoying feminism explore doing it right. But I think there a noticeable difference between engaging critically with our culture because it currently exists and purchasing into traditional gender mores. The Bust approach might not hit all of the right notes the promise that it help me good about being a girl does cause me to feel recoil just a little nevertheless its genuinely pro-woman approach still causes it to be a smarter read than many major mags. The bummer about debates such as these is they often end up with feminists taking are designed for each other rather than taking are designed for oppression and double standards.
