New Shoes Treads Heavily at Cowell,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Maybe it should be no big deal to go on dancing after 40. No big deal is actually the best way to describe "New Shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Old Souls," a quaint dance spectacle now at .
None of it is awful. But with the singular exception of a lovely new dance by ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not much of the choreography is memorable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and little of the dancing is inspired.
There is something a little unseemly about advertising dancers as old -- "over 500 years of dance experience between them" trumpet the ads -- rather than, say, good. Advancing age is no more a guarantee of high quality than youth, and this group's marketing is deceptive: The problem with most of the dancing in "New Shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Old Souls" is not always the age of the dancers but the quality of the dance. Surprise! A dancer can be so-so at any age.
Not that age doesn't matter. The show begins, unwisely, with a dreary ballet by called "Entre deux mondes/Between Two Worlds," set to Ravel's "Valses nobles et sentimentales." It is a big waltz for three couples using mostly classical ballet syntax, and a few problems arise: The choreography calls out for pointe work, so the women's moving in just slippers makes them look lazy or tired. On the men's side, the jump is often the first thing to go with too many birthdays,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Carvajal's moves were not flattering to his dancers. He made them look old. ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a pillar of and very much still active, emerged victorious.
The rest of the program,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], largely based on modern-dance steps, at least did not tax the ensemble's technique. A solo by and a big, strictly ballroom Pan-American blowout by Priscilla Regalado were seldom impressive in either conception or execution. A collaborative piece choreographed by several members of the company carried the cachet of being directed by , so it is not out place to remember that the great American choreographer also was the director of the Broadway megabomb "The Capeman." The new "Morris Dances" at Cowell, a suite of little pieces directed by Morris and danced to 's "Morris Dance Tunes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," is a modest, unassuming piece that was surely more fun to dance than to watch.
That is probably true of the whole show. It had something self-indulgent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an air of undisciplined improvisation that smacks of a fancy (night) school recital.
Smuin, bless him, knew what to do. For "My ," the director of invited three ballerinas for an evening of wine and conversation, steered the talk to each woman's first sexual experience,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then used the actual script as the basis for an intriguing trio of dance stories framed by songs. It is a simple idea, worth developing further. It is also a striking piece of dance, expertly lighted by with sexy dresses by .
Most of all, with its easy and sensual jazz choreography and disarmingly likable plot, "My First Time" made ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Sharonjean Leeds look absolutely terrific. Not young,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not old,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just beautiful. That is what dancing is all about.
