Rogue riders and filthy lycra,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
--------------------------------------------------
I might cycle but I am no cyclist - I'm not very good at it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for a start. I have never had a flat and would not know what to do if I did.
I have two pairs of Knicks and shoes that clip in. I find them scary and I've fallen over a few times because I didn't get the stupid things unclipped in time. I do not wear lycra,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my bike has a bunch of gears I rarely use and my handlebars are straight.
I cycle with a friend three or four mornings a week because we love the exercise and the fresh air, and a ride along the beach is the best way to start the day.
But now my peaceful mornings are being taken over by the Tour Down Under "we own the road this month" crowd - as one cyclist described them this week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
They fly along in whirring,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], brightly coloured swarms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], intimidating the hell out of recreationals like me.
I had a pack of 50 or so riders surround me in recent days. I was pedalling along the beachfront at Henley and suddenly they were there. They were trying to get past but it was early,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the road was empty and there was plenty of room for overtaking. Yet they did not trouble themselves to give me room. They whizzed past,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], four or five abreast,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], crowding me towards parked cars. I kept my elbows in and my head down and tried desperately to avoid hitting the cars on my left and the riders on my right.
Something similar happened to a friend of mine last year. He was riding to work during last year's "we own the road" month. A pack came in, surrounded him as he passed the Ramsgate Hotel on Military Rd and pushed him left. They were approaching parked cars and he yelled at them to give him room but was ignored. He hit the brakes too late.
My friend ploughed into the back of a parked car and they left him bleeding on the road with a broken collarbone.
They saw him crash but could not see their way to stopping and calling an ambulance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
A rider coming the other way - who happened to be a doctor - got off his bike and helped my friend get to hospital,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
To those riders - and I hope you read this - my friend had to be dragged from the road after a passing car narrowly avoided running him over. His head hit the ground so hard his helmet snapped in half,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leaving him with severe concussion.
The break in his collarbone was so severe it is yet to properly knit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. There was talk for months about inserting metal plates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Adelaide's regular cycling community is worried about the effect rogue riders will have on their hobby,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"We will encounter a lot of this cyclist stupidity over the coming weeks as the TDU 'we own the road this month' mentality sets in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," one cyclist warned his fellow riders on a forum.
"Riding in massive bunches 4-5 abreast on narrow country roads,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all over the place, stopping without warning and generally acting like the whole state has been put at their disposal for the duration of their `holiday of a lifetime!' . no wonder they get such bad press,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said another.
My friend and I ride at the crack of dawn because we don't like the idea of getting hit by a car,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. We ride when the roads are empty to stay out of everyone's way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
