15th Mississippi
The Battle of Shiloh was the very first of numerous major "Blood Baths" of the Civil War. In this ferocious battle the casualties amounted up to around 26,000-13,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 both sides. On the confederate side the troops were being commanded by General Albert Sidney Johnston. About the morning of April sixth Johnston led the 22nd Mississippi,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the 19th, 20th,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 28th, and 45th Tennessee into battle sparking the twoThis is really a picture from the "Hornet's Nest" within the battle of Shiloh. This is when the majority of the casualties happened. day battle. Around two in the afternoon the 15th under command of William F. Brantly of Company D was ordered by Brigadier General Staltham (former commander of the 15th) to flank the Union troops in the left. When they began there charge over the field for the enemy, the soldiers from the 15th were being torn apart. One man described it as being,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Soon men were falling on all sides. The powerful force from the Confederates pushed the government troops to the Tennessee River. The tired rebel troops raid the abandoned Union camps for any provisions that they could find. About the Second day's the Battle the new reinforcements which had arrived overnight charged about the worn-out confederate troops pushing them back for their original campground. Soon the Confederates were inside a full fledged retreat to the close by capital of scotland - Corinth. The 15th Mississippi was the final regiment to leave from the battle field. 200 of the 600 soldiers of the 15th died about the battle field. Although defeated the men kept their confidence up. One man said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Our loss was great, though not as great as the enemy." Click Battle of Shiloh for video.
The 15th was a regiment which was mainly made up of volunteers that made a decision to go fight. In those days there have been many reasons why the men would sign up. Some men wanted to display personal honor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], others made it happen because their community first viewed it as a right of passage. Throughout the span of the 15th's amount of time in the war the diseasesMen Hanging around the camp at meal time. passed with the men. "Each week a few new men enlisted while others received discharges, usually for medical reasons."(Wynne 47) Most of the soldiers within the 15th had not been exposed t large groups of diseases(childhood illnesses). In turn it took a toll on the regiment. The initial casualty of the 15th was Robert Deshazo of Company D, who fell victim to disease. On top of that the 15th lacked needed equipment. While they were in Corinth receiving better training than they had had in the home state,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they lacked necessary provisions such as tents,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], blankets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rifles, and uniforms. By Confederate law, infantry was necessary to get a small eleven dollars monthly. As the war went on the pay would be increased to eighteen dollars monthly to maintain the increasing inflation. At the time soldiers could purchase a pair of shoes for 100 dollars. The officers, however, received and inconsistent pay of 195 dollars per month. When the regiment was just forming, in 1861,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the morale from the troop was high. For them everybody was a war hero only for enlisting. By 1862 the confidence was fading quickly. The men were marching within the frigid cold and were missing there home. One man said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "All I can say now is that it's my intention to go home the moment I'm able to with honor to do this."(Wynne 5
It is 1864 and also the Civil War is coming to an end. The Confederates happen to be pushed out of Atlanta, Lee was on the run and General John Bell Hood had control of the Rebel forces. In November of 1864 the 33,000 that General Hood controlled, moved into Tennessee. After neglecting to trap the Union Forces led by Major General John M. Schofield at Columbia, Hood's army repeatedly attacked the government position at Franklin. One Union troop described,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Nothing may well be more suggestive of strength and discipline and resistless power than this long type of gray advancing within the plain."(Wynne 139) During the charge on Franklin the 15th was subjected to the "by far most deadly fire of both small arms and artillery."(Wynne 139) The Confederate charges went on during the night. Throughout the firing Schofield had withdrew some men in the front lines to fortify Nashville. Major General George H. Thomas took over all from the Federal forces. Hood followed but him men were to tired and beaten to fight. Hood's army waited awaiting an attack from Thomas, but rather he prepared the union Army. On the Morning of December 15th the Union attacked. They broke through the left side from the of the Confederate line and also the rebels began to retreat. The Battle was described as "One of the very decisive victories of the war"(Facts on File). The casualties documented on the Confederate side but it was estimated to about 1500 killed of wounded.
The Winters throughout the Civil War brought cease briefly to all the fighting. On either side Generals wereInside of Winter Quarter inclined no to fight because of freezing rain and heavy snow. The Armies went Outside of Winter Quarterinto sort of hibernation period in which the men went to their Winter Quarters. The Quarters themselves were small wooden/tent huts that may fit as much as as many as a dozen soldiers. The time of when the Soldiers were in their winter quarters it had been usually boring agitating due to the insufficient activities. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Fifteenth were built with a good 1862-1863 winter. These were stationed conveniently near to home. People using their town visited their camp and resupplied them and gave them updates about the local news.
The Civil War has ended and also the country is in chaos. When the survivors from the war within the 15th returned to Mississippi, these were greeted by a state in turmoil. More that certain third from the 78,000 from the men in Mississippi who volunteered were killed. In 1861 in Greensboro in Choctaw County home of Company D the Wigfaw Rifles was bustling with life. It had a courthouse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a jail,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], eighteen stores,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a newspaper, a livery stable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], along with a brickyard. When war was total that was left would be a graveyard. The value of farms and land plummeted. A farm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in Holmes County Mississippi, one of the richest counties in the state, had dropped from $9,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],642 to $1,208. Also in Choctaw County one of the poorest in Mississippi, the average farm might have dropped from $1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],754 to $320. The Country had been left in complete turmoil.
