Buster Posey shows its time for MLB to consider Tim McCarver rule for protecting catchers

McCarver, a major-league catcher for 21 seasons, said the concept occurred to him after he spoke this past year with former Cardinals catcher Mike Matheny, who was forced to retire because of concussion symptoms.

"Scioscia explained he didn't like it," McCarver said. "He said the main reason he didn enjoy it was that (blocking home plate) was the last vestige of courage the game has.
"I thought it was well-put,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I didn't agree with it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I still think something ought to be done."
The play on which Posey suffered his injuries began when the Marlins' Emilio Bonifacio hit a flyball to shallow right field,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
McCarver said that on the ball hit to right, the proper play for any catcher is to initially yield area of the plate for a runner to slide into,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then "close down" after catching the ball.
Posey set up in front from the plate, giving Cousins plenty of room to slip. But Cousins went suitable for Posey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who failed to control right fielder Nate Schierholz's throw on the short hop even before getting hit.
"If you eliminate any shots, you eliminate cheap shots,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," McCarver said. "You force the runner to slide straight in or go to the lower area of the body.
