To say that the scoring at the Beijing games was a joke is an understatement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Fighters were clearly scoring points and time and time again they were given nothing by the judges,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Paddy Barnes and Ken Egan being prime examples,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Although Barnes was well beaten he landed several scoring shots during the fight on to recieve no points. And in Egans case it probably cost him a gold medal. Although a few ( HOME TOWN ) decisions were also made along the way for the chinese fighters and not only in the boxing.
i have to agree completely. i watched pretty much every event at the olympics and the two that frustreted me the most was the taekwondo and boxing. Both requiring referees to agree on a particular attack's worthyness as a scoring point often left me wondering what on earth was going on. In the boxing i was much the same. waiting for obvious scoring points to come up yet nothing happened. Most frustrating when a boxer put a combo of hits in, everyone causing damage on the opponent yet only one point was given. Right then that told me the system had to be scrapped with less emphasis on straight technical hits and more towards a system that rewarded a fighter for effective punching and ring control with the winner and corner finding out points at the end and not duing the fight.

I agree with Wayne 100%. All through this games I have been fuming at the scoring in boxing. It has been very unfair on many boxers. Countless punches and combinations which, in professional boxing would have scored and been admired, were not rewarded with anything. I also think that there is incompetence, unfairness and favouritism amongst the judges, or at least that's how it seemed. I also totally agree that boxers and trainers should not be allowed to see the score during the bout. The current scoring system is enough to put anybody off. Bring back fairness and justice again.

I totally agree with him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but then again the same has happened in Pro fights, i remember Robin Reed Fighting some German Guy for a title and for me and the comentators he won it hands down,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there was no way Robin was going to win unless he knocked the guy out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and then they would have probably defaulted him for some reason if he did. I guess you can't win really,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unless they decide something like overtime until someone gets taken out. Maybe even have several Refs from different countries or even comentators making the final decision.
What an interesting read!!
I have to admit i was unsure how the scoring system worked and was growing more and more frustrated watching the olympic boxing this week.
But having read this i realise its not all down to the judges being bias towards the home fav (although i bet it was a big part).
The scoring system seems to be an attempt by the olympics to take on more technology, but they should have realised in the last 16 years that its just not working. Something needs to be done or when the olympics come to London then we will be in for the same critisms!!
Lee Courtney says.
Wayne is clearly right this is shown by the fact that he is criticising a system that benefited him. Another nonsense with the system is only 1 point for a knockdown or standing eight count. This means that a fighter who gets a count actually just benefits from a little break without any extra points gained by his oponent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The most ridiculous expose of the flaws of the system was Bradley Saunders stopping an oponent with a body shot that the computer (three slow judges) didn't even score. I would also like the fights to go back to the traditional 3 3's as opposed to 2 2's with three scoring judges (no computer) and the ref scoring exactly the same criteria for pro fights just over the shorter distance!
John Fleet says.
I totally agree with Wayne i was watching one fight at work but can't remember who it was and the guy who lost had clearly won in my eyes and in the pro's he would have because he totally dominated he was landing quality 1-2's and not even get a point for them.
I find that totally unfair and during the games it made me wonder if we would have get another brit fairy tale like audley harrison and amir khan.
Hopefully Degale can be that fairy tale and turn into a good pro but we could have had others
David Mosley says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
I quite agree, and not only is the scoring system for boxing wrong. Did you see the taekwondo? I've never seen such cheating, and that 's what it is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], by the judges. Thankfully that error was overturned. When I watched Degale win his gold if you watch the senior judge who holds up the "tennis bat" to announce the winner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he obviously didn't want us to win. He could hardly be bothered to lift it off the table and he looked as though he was chewing a wasp! Much needs to be done to ensure fairness in boxing and other sports to remove favouritism and downright raceism before 2012.
Andrew Skeete says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Yes!!! I agree with all that has been said. After the first few fights I stopped watching because the scoring in most cases did not reflect what was happening in the ring. I agree that the scoring should be scrapped and the traditional method of a panel judging the fight be reintroduced. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], although I am not sure how you will do it, a system will need to be developed that limits favouritism. Maybe the system used in gynastics the highest and the lowest dropped could work.
