Joseph Josie Kennedy
Westport, and Galway
Joseph (Josie) Kennedy, Westport, and Galway. The death has taken place at the Galway Hospice, following an illness borne with courage and dignity, of Mr Joseph (Josie) Kennedy, Barrack Hill, and Carrabawn, Westport, and latterly of Highfield Park, Galway. Son of the late James and Bridget Kennedy, he was aged 84 years and was a retired caretaker at Westport Vocational School,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], now Carrowbeg College.
Josie married Anne Sammon, daughter of the late Edward (Ned) and Bridget, John Row, Westport, while serving with the Defence Forces during the at the Curragh Camp, Co Kildare.
After retiring from the army, Josie, his wife, Annie, and their first-born child, Marie, returned to the family home on Barrack Hill, Westport, where, through the tough times that followed, they proudly reared their 13 children.
Josie worked with various employers, including Mayo County Council for a number of years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], before taking up a permanent post as a caretaker with Mayo VEC in the Vocational School, Westport. He was a very proud and diligent worker and was always held in high esteem by both students and teachers. Their friendship continued long after his retirement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and he was invited back on numerous occasions to attend and make presentations at special functions.
Josie was a keen gardener, providing a rich supply of fresh vegetables from his back garden on Barrack Hill, and previously from the on Sandyhill. He loved all animals but especially terrier dogs. They were always a constant companion to him, but were not always appreciated by his wife,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Annie, when they were tripping her up in the kitchen.
Josie was always interested in boxing. This stemmed from his time stationed at Griffith Stadium, where he trained and boxed regularly. He was a member of Westport Boxing Club when it was in existence on the Distillery/Mill Road. This interest in boxing has been passed down to the next two generations of his family at St Anne Boxing Club in Westport.
Josie also had a wealth of local knowledge and history, and he could recall the names of generations of families at will. He very recently identified an underground-pipe network in the streets of Westport that had baffled the local County Council workers.
Josie loved to entertain people and would, at the appropriate moment, graciously remove his mouth organ from his inside pocket and play a few bars of his old-time favourites when in the company of friends or while visiting the sick in hospital.
He had a passion for the bog and all things in nature, which meant, in the early years, getting up at dawn and cycling the eight miles to Owenwee Bog, with one or two of the lads on the bar and carrier of the bike. He would work through sun and rain until the daylight faded or the midges interrupted. He loved the ritual of making the tea. It was at these intervals that he would gaze and wonder at the rising and singing of the lark and at all of what mother nature had to offer. There was great joy in the Kennedy household when the Ford arrived,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as the bikes were no longer required for those arduous trips.
Dancing became an obsession after retiring from the VEC, and Josie and Annie spent the next number of years treading the floorboards at such venues as The Beaten Path and across the length and breadth of the country. Although very proud of the numerous trophies won in competition, Josie got more enjoyment from dressing up for the occasion and from meeting new friends. After Annie untimely death in 1990, he hung up his dancing shoes but always kept in touch with his dancing colleagues.
Tony Chambers (RIP) of of Romance fame was an inspiration to Josie, and he would bring him on around the country from time to time. It was on one such trip to Galway that Josie once again donned the dancing shoes and here teamed up with another dancing partner. They became very good friends and companions and a number of years later, Josie and Margaret were married. This passion for dancing continued right up to the very end of his life.
For many years, Josie was also a member of the Westport Branch of Mayo Mental Health Association,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and he spent much of his spare time visiting and entertaining residents of the MacBride Nursing Unit in Westport, St Mary Hospital and the Sacred Heart Hospital,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Castlebar.
Predeceased by his first wife,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Annie, he will be very sadly missed by his wife,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Margaret; sons, Marvin, P Joe, Garry, Gerard,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], John,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Eamonn, Dessie, Stephen and Martin; daughters, Marie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Anne and Stephanie; sons-in-law and daughters-in-law; 51 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, John Foy (Westport); extended family, including the Kennedy family (Partry),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Rice family (Derby, England) and the Glynn family (Galway); neighbours in Westport and Galway and a wide circle of friends. He was predeceased by his brother, P and sister, Kate.
Removal was from the Galway Hospice, Renmore,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to Josie home at Highfield Park, where neighbours lined the footpath to bid him a final farewell. Families and neighbours recalled many happy times with Josie before further removal took place to Navin Funeral Home, Westport,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where large crowds gathered to offer their sympathies.
Fr Denis Carney officiated when removal took place to St Mary Church, Westport, and was also the chief celebrant of Josie Funeral Mass. The concelebrants were Fr Vincent Kelly, Fr Stephen O Fr Willie Spicer and Fr Miche Mac Gr Family members participated in the liturgy, and St Mary Church Choir was under the direction of parish organist, Mr Gabriel Kelly.相关的主题文章:
