Dressing for events
I do not subscribe to style codes as laid down by Ascot or Vogue. I believe in looking the best you are able to, regardless of what everybody else thinks.
So, pleasing yourself is rule number 1, because if you love what you're wearing then that positive feeling will radiate out of you, and everybody else will love you inside it too.
Colour is exactly what looking positive is about the ones respond to colour - you and also those looking at you. Shape does have to be taken into account too. Ladies who are voluptuous and fleshy may look cute in pretty coloured tracksuits in your own home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but at a formal event you'll meet lots of people who're judgemental of this weight.
As I said a week ago, Irish designers and manufacturing labels are the best for event garb. They have been catering to that marketplace for years and are very conscious of international fashion so now you are getting all their intimate, practical, understanding of Irish life, coupled with international fashion savvy.
Most Irish labels do up to size 16-18, and that we possess some excellent plus size labels for example Claudia Stevens and private Choice (that has updated its look a lot this last year). Irish labels tend to look after all of the angles. Michel Ambers and Deborah Veale do all of the pieces. Whether the local boutique bought all the pieces is another issue.
N C Kilkenny perform a ruched strapless, bodice dress in a type of crushed fabric, which looks like nothing on the hanger and may be sensational about the woman who either includes a belly larger than her boobs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or boobs that will get her the type of attention she doesn't want. It's a lot like magic dress. It holds you in and provides you shape, while causing you to feel comfortable.
Boho for wedding garb is so over. Sophistication is in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], meaning a particular formality such as jackets with flirty skirts or pretty dresses.
If you are into looking sophisticated and chic, Deborah Veale went very Donna Karan understated sexy this season. I particularly like her shorts suit for difference. Likewise, Helen McAlinden is very DK in her vibe.
Stores such as the House of Fraser, Arnotts Mezzanine level, the Kilkenny Shop and the Design Centre are very good for stocking a choice of Irish labels such as Aideen Bodkin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], N C Kilkenny, Deborah Veale and Helen McAlinden. While good local boutiques round the country are brilliant for other great event labels such as Rachel Mackay, Fee G, Michel Ambers and Kate Cooper. Michael H shops stock Personal Choice, Gold and Lady H.
If you do not like pretty dress looks, I suggest you purchase a dressy coat, in special fabric or possibly with unique detail. Such as Fee G's embroidered coat, Aideen Bodkin's panelled coat or one of Avoca Anthology's soft gold brocade coats. Quin Donnelly are also constant when it comes to dressy, although not fussy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coats.
Ann Louise Roswald, a UK designer with a home in Co Clare, does gorgeous, though more pricey, coats and fab print dresses, available nationwide in good designer boutiques for example Sea Green, Monkstown, Co Dublin; Diffusion, Clontarf; Les Jumelles, Galway, and Samui, Cork.
High Street-wise, Oasis too can be great for dressy coats; Penneys has a soft white frock coat with metallic sheen into it, that is very Burberry cool. It goes without saying that Coast is always a starting point for wedding garb, quite a few you worry about bumping into it elsewhere, which is a danger with this most popular event label.
If I had money and I wanted to have a bit of fun, I'd definitely visit some of the indie boutiques round the country. Sea Green in south Dublin has stunning, unusual dresses by Anna Sui and Nanette Lepore. I like Eden in Dundalk's funky, slightly retro, always unique vibe. Monica John on French Church Street in Cork has bought very colourfully and comfortably this summer. I also wouldn't miss visiting Beth, also on French Church Street, Cork. Beth knows how to buy dresses.
For the woman who loves to be fantastic, and for whom money is no object, then visits to the Design Centre, 5 Scarlet Row, Smock and Havana area must.
Costelloe and Costelloe are great for cheap, quick fashion transformations via accessories. Pace in Howth is a good source. At the upper end from the price spectrum, Pat Whyte does very colourful, summery designs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while Vivien Walsh is extremely understated.
For buying fab event shoes, often with prices starting at ?75-?200, try Shoala on Patrick Street, in Dun Laoghaire. Lipuzzi in the junction of Bloomfield shopping centre and Convent Road, has long been one of the best-kept secrets. Dun Laoghaire also has two plus-sizes dress stores - Xpressions and Curves. Up a price bracket, I really like Cherche Midi in Drury St, Dublin 2, and Blackrock, Co Dublin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for any fix of eccentricity.
If you're able to only do one store, BT's Level ll could be a good stop. Fenn Wright Manson, obtainable in Brown Thomas nationwide, is a superb supply of occasion dressing. Additionally, it has some good pieces for older women. While shoe label Bertie always does really funky, a girl's just received to possess 'em sandals in the summertime with prices from about ?60to ?120.
If you are shopping for bridesmaids' outfits and are prepared to spend ?150-?350 each on their outfits, little boutiques such as Allicano on Stephen's Street,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Dublin, ought to be a first stop. One very good friend of mine took her bridesmaids shopping and suggested a colour but allow her to bridesmaids select the shapes and fabrics that suited them the very best. The result would be a happy and stunning-looking number of ladies who counseled me shapes and sizes but didn't feel inadequate next to each other, or near the guests in the wedding.
If budget is an issue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], high street stores such as Sasha often do a few really cute Fifties-themed summer bustier dresses which are always flattering. With the help of some corsages or funky jewellery similar to this season's big plastic Eighties beads you have a look that is flattering but unique. Penneys always do fabby-coloured pumps. Savida in Dunnes has stunning dresses and shoes right now.
In Irish catalogue Family Album I discovered an excellent range by Nicholas Millington. A mixture of Ghost meets Donna Karan meets Deborah Veale. Simply Be can also be ideal for plus sizes.
Last word - underwear. Though I do not like them, a lot of women swear by them; Spanx support underwear - particularly their high-waisted (ending just under the boobs), to across the knees,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spandex support garment holds everything in. Just don't let anyone see them on you as they are truly horrendous on but provides you with the confidence to put on the outfit you would like! Available from Brown Thomas, Fran and Jane and good boutiques and lingerie stores nationwide.
