Stacey Campfield wins tight GOP race for 7th District Senate Knoxville News Sentinel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
State Rep. Stacey Campfield won the Republican nomination for the 7th District Senate seat in a close race Thursday over Ron Leadbetter, retired associate general counsel from the University of Tennessee.
Steve Hill,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who raised the most money in the campaign,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ran a distant third in the closely watched race to succeed
Ray L. Jenkins,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Knox County Republican Party chairman, announced that Campfield had won the 7th District seat at a victory party at the Crowne Plaza hotel. We ran a hard campaign. We thought we had the right message. The people spoke. I respect the people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Hill said.
Fourth candidate Nicholas Ciparro,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 30,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a cook at the Valarium Cider House, received 2 percent of the vote. He barely campaigned and raised no money.
Campfield, 42,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has been in the House since 2004. His legislative career has been controversial. He tried to join the Legislature's Black Caucus and last Halloween was removed from a University of Tennessee football game after a confrontation with UT police over wearing a Mexican wrestling mask when spectators were told to attend unmasked.
Campfield has strong supporters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he also benefited from an anti-Campfield vote that split between Leadbetter and Hill.
Leadbetter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 63, ran against Campfield two years ago for the 18th District House seat.
Hill,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 67,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], formerly was on the Knox County school board. He retired last year as business development officer for Mercy Health Systems.
The winner faces Democrat Randy Walker and Independent Chuck Williams,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a former Democrat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the general election.
Walker said in a statement he will be campaigning on the economy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Jobs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], job creation and providing Knoxvillians with economic opportunities are really the only issues on the minds of voters in today's tough economy," he said. "My campaign is going to be about focusing on the concerns of Knoxvillians and bringing good, high-paying jobs to Knoxville."
Williams attended the Republican Party's victory party at the Crowne Plaza and said he is ready to campaign,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I've bought 14 pairs of brand-new sneakers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
Campfield used a campaign video and brochure at the last minute this week to suggest Tim Burchett supported him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Burchett said repeatedly he was staying out of the race,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Campfield and Leadbetter entered the campaign much earlier than Hill,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Hill said that probably contributed to his defeat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Georgiana Vines,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], retired News Sentinel associate editor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], may be reached at 865-577-6612.
It is really a sad commentary on the mental capacity of 7th district voters that they took a look at this guy's record of failed bill after failed bill, out of chamber antics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], overall village idiot persona,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and declared him fit to continue to represent them. For all you hard line conservatives out there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], please tell me what exactly has this man done to advance your cause? For the record I don't think party affliation should factor into this one bit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if he was a democrat doing the dumb stuff he does I'd think he was just as stupid.
Well it's good to know we have more parking on sidewalks and spooky mask hijinks to look forward to. And it's good to know that a majority of the voters didn't want someone who constantly displays a total lack of judgment and common sense to represent them, yet sadly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because they could not unite,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this is what they get.
It's times like this that I feel like Louisiana has it right. If no one wins 51% of the vote,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then the top two have a runoff. Nothing like having someone who 60% of the voters oppose win the election.
If Campfield could come up with some useful legislation my opinion of him might improve a little. However ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he always seems to introduce highly controversial legislation and then bathes in the limelight that he gets as a result.
Just one ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Stacey. For now , just one piece of original legislation that actually helps in the day to day operation and performance of government. That's all I'm asking for.
But ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], instead I'm afraid we'll just see more "in your face" political attention grabbing. With Campfield ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I will probably never see the day he introduces "quiet" legislation that passes and helps the people of this state without causing major controversy.
