Backseat Driver
I like metaphors. Never had a wedge this big been shoved between us. Never had a canyon appeared so wide. It's easy to forget the rare and privileged perspective a bloke has being a car scribe. And the effects thereof. Having sampled numerous 911 variants in every sort of driving situation had,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], over time, glacially cultivated a deep-seated love for the icon. I get the 911. The 911 is an idea and a concept continually travelling on a path to perfection, a masterpiece in an ongoing evolution. Or Mosman. She sees,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in her mind, 50-something male trying to compensate for deficiencies. "How much does it cost?" she asks as I motion her into the front passenger seat. I glance at her over the roof, a roof that will forever make the Cayman hideous in my eyes because the 911's roofline is such thing of beauty. She sees its plain white paintwork."A quarter mil", I reply,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], shutting the driver's door behind me."Wanker's car."Silence. There's more silence as I my eyes wander over the interior. The clarity of the centrally mounted tacho. Glimpses of the pumped rear guards in the wing mirrors. The evenness of the stitching in the leather-bound console. The ergonomic perfection of the steering wheel and gear-shift placement. I get it. She most certainly doesn't. And then it hits me. "Shoes!" She loves shoes. No,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she's a die-hard, bona-fide enthusiast shoe-lover. And I fire a shot of opinion into very dangerous territory that I know nothing about. Or so I thought."What's a really fine pair of Italian women's shoes cost?" I ask. About a grand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she says. "Tell me something: Are they the glitziest shoes you can buy? The tallest heels? The most visual fanfare?" "No,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she replies. "The best are quite subtle looking, actually.""And I presume a lot of thought goes into their shape - a balance between optimum styling and most ideal shape for your foot, right?""Uh-huh," she responds, cautiously."And imagine that $1000 buys you zero compromises in materials,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," I continue. "The best leather,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the finest stitching, etcetera."She raises an eyebrow. "I imagine the finest shoes of their type would also be the most comfortable of their type…"Silence."And I'm sure some pretty unsavoury women wear some pretty fine footwear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," I add. Bingo! "That's not going to stop you loving and wearing them, is it?" Everyone has opinions on cars. That's because almost everyone owns one. And die-hard petrolheads know their favourite subject is viewed differently between drivers and motorists, between car-lovers and those who treat vehicles purely as appliances. We all wear shoes, right? I'm entitled to my opinion about them, too. I'm not trying to boast the holier-than-thou higher ground, here. And the two solid minutes of research I put into the purchasing process - Google - revealed that they're styled after shoes made for the Japanese Olympic team for the Mexico games. In 1966. Or something. The test drive took even less time and consideration - fitting one unlaced shoe in a store. But a blind monkey could see the rubber and canvas materials involved in their manufacture would hardly dent a fraction of their retail price. Their design,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as maker Asics clearly points out, is 44 years old. Nor did I vigorously test their ground-holding abilities to discover that their sole is a bit slippery on hard, smooth surface. Karma will have it that, any day now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'll get stuck at a dinner party next to an orthopaedics expert. Or a journalist from Fine Shoes Monthly. Or the bloke who now designs and engineers shoes for current Japanese Olympic team. And, to be honest, I don't care about their opinions. I like my Tigers. Mostly because I think they look cool. They don't fit a 911-like mould, but nor do I expect them to. Not everything in life needs to be entirely practical, sensible,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pragmatic or fiscally wise. Sometimes feel-go od rules. And this applies to cars as much as anything else.

Review: Opel Corsa OPCThere are a lot of emotions I expected to see on the face of the bloke getting out of the Opel Corsa OPC in front of me - bemusement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sadness, fear - but joy was not one of them.
