In a celebration of the aura of contemporary art in Pakistan under the title 'Or something like it',[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a scintillating and dynamic display of contemporary artworks opened at Satrang Gallery on Tuesday offering a unique visual experience of mystic musings.
Works by participating artists Suleman Khilji, Maria Khan, Amra Khan, Nazir Hunzai,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Zara Asghar, Waqqas Anees,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Saud Baloch showcases vibrant manifestation and aesthetic sensibilities moulded in spiritualistic creativity. The display includes a wonderful blend of drawings and sculpture wrapped in amazing skill and imageries. Satrang Gallery Director Asma Rashid Khan described the exhibition as a spectacular show of unique contemporary artists of Pakistan.
Established a year back, Satrang Gallery has opened its platform to arts in all forms and held more than 12 exclusive exhibitions covering drawings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], printmaking, sculpture, miniature, and photography to showcase the immense talent of Pakistani artists.
Zahra Khan, curator of this exclusive exhibition said that the show re-examines the basic art forms of drawing and sculpture and explore the creative power and command of seven most talented draftsmen challenging the idea of artistic limitations via their chosen mediums.
Zahra said that the artists have created personal and alternate universe as viewed through their creative eyes and mind in order to analyse and visualise diverse aspects of life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], human relationships, gender inequalities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and technological advancement.
Suleman Aqeel Khilji's work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], particularly his large sized mural titled 'In praise of Idleness' draws instant attention of the viewer as a mystic exploration of mind and soul to reach for the ultimate reality. Done in graphite on canvas and wash in dark shades of black, bluish grey to portray chaos and turmoil surrounding life today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the dab of white remains symbol of hope in an angelic image.
NCA graduate with distinction in paintings, Suleman says his works are based on both planned and unplanned experiments, done in a flow of his sub-conscious as well as how his subject appears to him in reality. Inspired by abstract expressionists like Belgian artist Edward Munkh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Suleman loves to work on larger size paintings. He describes his work as a conversation between the medium and himself, searching for light complementing the dark as he feels that there is a harmony in the dark ambiance. The childhood tales heard from his grandfather evolved through decades in his works as meaningful lessons learned from myths, a point of view that exists in his work.
Amra Khan's unique and intricate drawings dipped in tea and coffee stains and washes carries symbolic imageries that explore gender issue by depicting human conflicts. Amra's pieces portray visible tension, subversive postures,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and sexual identity. Also an NCA Graduate with distinction in paintings, Amra describes her art trends to work around having two poles and different ideas or personalities living in the same body. Amra says she works to speak through and incite the observer to question tangibility. In her creative quest, Amra feels if only life could be accepted with all its stains, dabs and spills, for to her they hold more than the plain white paper.
Another artist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Maria Khan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is an NCA graduate in visual arts with distinction in studio practice. Maria's works revolves around the state of being deformed. Portraying larger than life monstrous characters, Maria touches a subject, which is borderline feminist.
Zara Asghar's fascination lies in exploring the twists and turns of folds in drapery exposed to a single source of strong light. An NCA Bachelor in Printmaking, Zara's choice of medium is primarily charcoal and it is the intensity of black that attracts her creative sensitivity and provides her a thrilling and almost delectable process of work for her.
Nazir Hunzai's forms are heavily dependent on the found objects in vintage markets, including stuffed toys,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], puppets, bags and shoes as they arrive stuffed in box00es, ready to be sold.
Graduate of NCA Rawalpindi Campus with distinction in sculpture, Nazir makes an effort to give life to his lifeless forms by creating a new purpose and a new role for his found objects. In his creative process, he re-makes them and challenges the ideas of a single lifetime of an artwork.
A Graduate in Visual Art from Beacon House University Lahore, Waqqas Anees works on technological advancement that has left behind mankind emerging as fossils.
Saud Baloch did his graduation from NCA Lahore with distinction in sculpture. His works on display explores natural symbolism. As a contemporary artist, he believes that the material world can speak with grace to us about matters of contemporary concern-social, political, and cultural-in relation to which we have lost our bearings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or about which we remain silent.
