Speaking from the heart
A young man was flipping through a book and others were chitchatting when Joseph "Black Atticus" Woods began reciting poetry at the World Grotto on a recent evening.
Not a flowery sonnet. Not the hipster verse of beatniks in berets.
Woods, 27, expounded in a hip-hop, spoken-word style on the struggles of growing up too poor to afford name-brand sneakers,[url=http://discountnikesoccershoes.webmium.com/][b]Discount Nike Soccer Shoes[/b][/url], being teased,[url=http://woolrichparkaschweiz.albirank.net/][b]woolrich winter coats woolen mills[/b][/url], and materialism in American culture.
The audience couldn't help but stop and listen, and it was over in less than three minutes.
Woods is a founder of BlackSunshine Arts 'N' Entertainment (BSANE), which is inviting the public and other performers to hear spoken-word and musical performances at a fundraiser for the team's trip to this year's National Poetry Slam in Austin, Texas.
"We're consistently attacking at a national level," said Woods, explaining that Knoxville's team has competed nationally a handful of times. The four poets competing in Austin practiced Tuesday evening at World Grotto on Market Square, including Rhea "RheaSunshine" Scruggs,[url=http://rogervivierheelssale.webstarts.com/][b]http://rogervivierheelssale.webstarts.com/[/b][/url], 29, co-founder of BlackSunshine and a University of Tennessee educational specialist for the pre-college Upward Bound program; Jonathan "Courageous" Clark, 21,[url=http://parajumperssalenorge.albirank.net/][b]Parajumpers Jakke Outlet[/b][/url], a UT student; Renee "Copper Head Red" Hickman, 30, who's studying massage therapy; and Woods, who works in his family's printing business at Knoxville Center.
A poetry slam is a competition that gives contestants three minutes, with no props, to deliver spoken-word poems on topics ranging from race and gender to social causes and personal pain.
"It's about helping people identify with their problems, show that they too can express themselves," Woods said.
Clark began performing at 13. Many of his first venues were bars.
"They couldn't make an 'X' big enough," Clark said, referring to the mark inked onto the hands of underage patrons. "Poetry was always an escape for my negativity, because it was on paper, not in my head; it's also a chance to look back and see how good things are."
He met Scruggs at a youth theater troupe at Knoxville College.
A mutual friend introduced Hickman to Scruggs.
"I've been performing since (age) 3, but doing slam poetry for less than two years,[url=http://rogervivieronlinesale.olimx.com/][b]roger vivier online[/b][/url]," said Hickman, who speaks as an activist from a personal perspective. "I talk about the environment, education and empowering women.
"Slam is cathartic. It allows me to express emotions that are hard to put on paper."
