BROOKFIELD -- The couch was piled with fleece in the form of vests, jackets and shirts. UGG boots spilled from a box on the floor. Seventeen-year-old graduate Victoria Draper Townsend surveyed the pile of clothes she'll need at this fall as her mother presented her with her linens as a graduation present. The multicolored, striped quilt and matching sheets coordinated with some towels.
"I've definitely been thinking a lot about it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' Townsend said. "I'll have to wear lots of layers because it's cold up there."
Townsend has not learned her roommate's name or her room assignment yet, but she's read the brochure from Dartmouth and knows she can't bring things like candles or incense to school.
"I'm trying to figure out how much to pack because I overpack for everything,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said. "I have to decide how many shoes to bring."
The daughter of two doctors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Gary Townsend,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hasn't decided on a major yet because she loves history,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], English and math. But,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she was so certain that she wanted to attend her mother's alma mater that she applied early and learned in December she was accepted.
"We're allowed to bring a coffee maker and a microwave and I can bring a TV,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I wouldn't want it to be disturbing to me,'' she said. She'll bring a laptop,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], iPod and cell phone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and she got a checking account and debit card at the start of her senior year so she'd learn to be financially independent for college.
"The next stop is the for some desk supplies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' she said.
Colleges are pro-active with their freshmen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], guiding them with things to bring and what to leave home.
in Danbury sends a list of recommendations that refers to their room assignment in a traditional dorm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a suite or a regular apartment with a kitchen.
"We put things on the list like a telephone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], seasonal clothing with some transitional pieces since they'll have a small place for storage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and sheets and blankets for regular twin beds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' said ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], WestConn's director for residential programs and staff. "We provide the dressers and beds and blinds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but if they want curtains they need a tension bar. They can rent a refrigerator or buy one,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but microwaves are out for us. We made that decision a few years ago.''
However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the college does allow students to rent a combination refrigerator-freezer-microwave that doesn't use too much energy.
"We tell them to bring rugs for the floors because mostly we have tile floors and it's warmer and also dampens down noise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said. "A lot of kids bring flat screen televisions. There's not a lot of large stereo equipment anymore. You see speakers but iPods have replaced the stereos we saw ten years ago.''
The rooms have overhead lights,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but students will need task lights,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but not halogens,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which are banned because they get too hot.
"We sent out our room assignments and roommates last week. The whole point is to get them to talk to each other so they figure out what each of them will bring,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' she said.
graduate has spent three years at in Easton,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mass., and has come up with some tips for college freshmen heading off to school -- like bring cleaning materials but not many books.
"When it comes to packing necessities like bathroom supplies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bring enough to get through until your break," the 20-year-old said. "It saves a little money if you bring them from home."
He brought books for pleasure reading but soon learned that as a liberal arts major,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his assigned reading left him little free time to read. He also found the school work load heavy.
"It's a lot more work than high school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "Freshman year will surprise you. If you have been coasting through high school it's a lot harder.''
He encouraged freshmen to connect with their roommates before school starts too,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"It's really a good idea to get to know your roommate,'' he said. "You either know what to expect or you know if it's not going to work."
didn't recommend that her sister buy sheets from the college plan like she did because they weren't that soft,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but she has some must-take items on a list.
"The top three things that are essential are an alarm clock, a backpack and shower shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said. "The room is smaller than you think it will be. It's better to wait to see your room set up. I went out after I got here to Target and bought some storage drawers." (She packed a suitcase with winter clothes her parents brought to her in the late fall because she knew she would not have enough closet space.
"Many campuses have poster sales so you don't have to have all your decorations ahead of time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said. "It's definitely a process. You'll start and by the end of the year you'll have a very eclectic looking room."
Townsend doesn't have a TV,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but said some of her best friends can't live without one.
"I set up an account with the federal credit union at Notre Dame. All the ATMs on campus are free and I have checking and savings there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said. "Everything's worked out pretty well. I learned in my freshman year to be flexible and I'm a self-identified control freak.''
