Behind the Scenes with Calista Brill
Here the communications center of this massive operation (aka Calista office). I work for First Second,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a publisher of graphic novels for readers of all ages. We have an award-winning list (American Born Chinese, Laika, The Photographer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Adventures in Cartooning and an incredible line-up of projects in development for future publication.
Which is why a good collection of brightly colored markers is vital! When you thinking about comics all day (all right, novels it vital to keep yourself in a visual place. I made that up. Actually, I just enjoy playing with markers.
Seriously, though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for someone with such an art-oriented job, and so much (so,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so much) reading to do, I spend most of my day at this computer, writing and reading email. There also a ton of in-house back-and-forth making sure every title is on track and that I haven forgotten to write flap copy for a book that about to print. Again.
It turns out First Second is basically a cat herding operation. Which is great,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], actually, because I love cats.
That my cat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Here she represents one of the hundreds of moving parts that get our books onto shelves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. She also represents a cat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
When I do get a chance to, you know, EDIT,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I often do it here, at my sweet little reading table. This is where I read scripts, review thumbnails, check pencils and inks, line edit, check copy edits, line edit again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], check changes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], look at proofs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], look at second proofs, look at blues, mark up reprints,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and stare out the window in inchoate wonder that I have a JOB MAKING AWESOME COMICS. And sometimes nap. Inchoately.
Here on the center shelf are all the awesome comics First Second has so far published (plus a few that haven actually hit shelves yet!). When I feeling bogged down or overwhelmed, this shelf is a source of inspiration and comfort for me. Deadlines come and go (oh how they go),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], emails disappear into the aether,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and sometimes I forget to write flap copy. But a book is forever. And these books are really good forever.
