For example, let's say you're matching the additional weight that a friend of mine (who we'll call Cathy) carries in her own car. Even a slight difference of just ten pounds may have a real financial impact. These things add weight towards the car and you purchase that weight directly in the fuel pump and indirectly whenever you get maintenance work done in your car or need a repair done.
There's just one exception to this rule that I have found. If you're seeing any chance of icy roads,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's worthwhile to have extra weight in your car because it improves your traction and keeps you safe. I often carry that extra weight in the form of sand bags or rock salt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], each of which will help you inside a rough winter situation. The extra safety factors are really worth losing several percent in fuel efficiency for a season.
Aside from that, you're only saving cash and helping your automobile's lifespan by reduction of the strain you're carrying. If you're not hauling it around for any purpose, don't haul it around.
