1 hope almost became a Boomer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
And when Boomers officials watch 19-year-old shooting guard Kyrie Irving appear at next month's NBA Draft - where he is tipped to be the No. 1 pick - they won't be able to help but wonder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what if?
Irving, a freshman who averaged 17.5 points a game at Duke University this season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has dual US and Australian citizenship.
Born in Victoria while his father, Drederick,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], played for the Bulleen Boomers, Irving only spent the first year of his life Down Under before moving to the US.
But he didn't escape the attention of Boomers coach Brett Brown, who kept a close eye on Irving as he began to shine at St Patrick High School in New Jersey.
In 2009,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], still unsure about whether Patrick Mills was the long-term replacement for the ageing CJ Bruton at point guard, Brown decided to make a move.
He met with Boomers team manager Nic Mercer and mapped out a recruiting plan for Irving,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Brown, a San Antonio Spurs assistant, would keep in regular contact with Drederick Irving, visiting the father,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and on one occasion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kyrie, when the Spurs were playing in New Jersey.
He would try to convince Irving to play for Australia at the 2010 FIBA Oceania Youth tournament, tying him to the green and gold for the rest of his international career.
"We put some money aside to recruit him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Mercer said.
"We wanted to fly Kyrie and his father out to Australia to watch how our under-19s prepared for the Oceania tournament.
"Drederick had really enjoyed his time playing in Australia and was somewhat excited about taking a family holiday out here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
As the tournament approached, Brown began to sell harder.
While their were no guarantees,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Brown told Irving he had the opportunity to play for Australia at the 2012 London Olympics - giving him the chance to play on the world stage far earlier in his career than would be possible in the more competitive US program.
"When you put in front of a kid an opportunity to go to the Olympics in three years - which would have made him 20 - it's pretty enticing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Mercer said.
"He would have had the opportunity to play in three or four Olympics for Australia, which compared to the US where you get one, maybe two opportunities if you're really talented - and for him it wasn't going to be for a while - it's a big difference."
The turning point in Irving's eventual decision to play for the US perhaps came on October 22, 2009, when he committed to play at Duke.
Irving would spend his college career playing under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who also happens to be the head coach of the US national team.
Six months later he was in the stars and stripes uniform,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], winning a gold medal with the US team at the FIBA Americas under-18 championship.
Any chance of Australia securing the talented hoopster was lost.
"I'm sure he had a tough time making the decision,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Mercer said. "We certainly respect him for having the self-belief to think he's going to make it (into the US senior team), and that means reaching the level of a Chris Paul or a Jason Kidd.相关的主题文章:
