Callaway family has deep roots in Alamogordo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
In the late 1870s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Col. Samuel Cooper came to New Mexico. In the 1880s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Cooper moved his family from Tennessee to Tularosa. A family story is that Rhodes was enamored with one of the Cooper girls and vowed to marry her when she turned 16. On the girl's sixteenth birthday Rhodes showed up at the family home with a preacher. Alas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the girl had gone back to Tennessee. Before that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they had lived in Alamogordo. That year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their son Bob was born in the service station. As the interview continued I counted up Callaways by generations in southern New Mexico. Dunn family (Aubrey and Bill Dunn's dad) in several ventures. In the 1950s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bob bought out Aubrey and Bill from the last assets of that partnership. In 1934,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Herb Callaway built a home at 611 14th St. That was on the highway then. The highway Advertisement
relocated to Pennsylvania (now White Sands Boulevard). So the Callaway station moved to the corner of Ninth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue on the new highway. Most of the boys went to school barefoot. Bob's folks bought shoes for Bob to wear to school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that would embarrass him in front of his friends. As he walked to school he crossed a water ditch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], took off the shoes and hid them on the bank of the ditch. A V-2 roared over Alamogordo and crashed near what is now Indian Wells Road and Scenic Drive. The next day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bob and his buddies went up to the wreckage. The Army guards wouldn't let them near it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but let the boys climb a hill and look down on the crash scene. Carl Anderson and others had gone up to the crash site during the night and took some cameras off the V-2. The military came to Alamogordo and went door to door until they recovered all the cameras."There were lots of pretty girls which included Dixie Sutton,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Gillis sisters, Loma Tinsley and lots more,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Bob said of the girls in high school. Loma had a small car and would park it near the gym. Bob and his friends would pick the car up and put it in the gym vestibule. Then other boys would have to come and take it down. "We did a lot of things together, including get in trouble."Bob lettered three years in basketball and football. He was student body president in 1950. Bob loved airplanes from the time he was 12 years old. At that time the school had an enrollment of approximately 2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],500 students. Bob received his mechanical engineering degree in 1954. Air Force. Before he could be deployed to Korea, the Korean War ended. Bob went to several specialty schools in the Air Force. Because of that training,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Air Force wouldn't let him resign his commission. "During the Depression,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], everyone here seemed to be employed and comfortable. Moving here in 1934,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the streets were unpaved except for New York Avenue. When I returned from the service there were streets I didn't know existed -- a whole new town."I asked Bob if there is anything else. He became pensive and told me about the brothers of Outdoor Zesty Endeavors -- the Booze Group -- that started in 1959. The "brothers" have yearly gone up to the Los Pinos River in northern New Mexico to fish. Bob says those are special times. Some of those brothers who have gone had their ashes dispersed on the Los Pinos River."We are still going there every year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Bob said.
