Coming Out Crazy
They a sleek little number ~ simple,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], black,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a three-inch heel. Great for walking. A very low ankle boot,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], really,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a four-inch zipper on the instep. And they don hurt. Most shoes hurt me, except sneakers.
Perfect, for me had an appointment with Dr. Bob,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my psychiatrist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at his office. I like to look nice for him. It gives me a lift. We have a relationship like none other. He notices everything. Inside and out. He never misses a trick.
Dr. Bob office is downtown on University Avenue in Toronto. Miles from me in the suburbs. I must be driven to the subway,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which takes me to College Street,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and then I walk to see him at the University Health Network. About a 10-minute walk.
It was a first,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], after more than 20 years I had to have blood work. Then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I zipped up to Dr. Bob on the eighth floor. for my appointment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a little breathless,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but in perfect time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he said:
appointment at 11,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I was shocked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. This was a first,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I never early for anything,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I detest waiting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I a problem patient,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what to do? Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I decided to go up to the Transplant Kidney Clinic on the 12th floor because my calves are swelling. Not my ankles. Just my calves.
I mean seriously S-W-E-L-L-I-N-G like never before. I thought my swelling was caused by the heat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it not hot here any more. Today was perfect,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], around 75 degrees. But my calves are huge. So gigantic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I can get a pair of jeans to fit. Some of my other trousers don fit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], either. I can even get them on. They the legs won stretch over my calves. My calves are thicker than my thighs.
I a size 8,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but my calves are a size 44.
Something wrong. As a kidney transplant patient, I have to be vigilant ~ and I am. Kidney transplant patients live with many strange symptoms. We all different.
Six weeks ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I was in perfect shape had my annual physical and my only problem was my chronic anemia. My hemoglobin was low. That nothing for me. Now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I don know. I was able to see my kidney transplant coordinator today. She knew I was swelling because she arranged that battery of blood tests this morning ~ but I thought I show her how much.
When I lifted the trouser leg of my very baggy 10-year-old pants,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I noticed that one of the little zippers on my right shoe was broken. That really upset me. This was their maiden voyage.
Another stress,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when stress seems to be running my life these days. Did I need one more?
What was causing the swelling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
My transplant coordinator said she had no idea. The unknown is sometimes worse than bad news,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for me with my imagination.
are living a very healthy lifestyle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], after firing a round of questions at me. have your blood work in several hours. Give me your cell phone number. I call you after I speak to Dr. Cole,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my transplant doctor and head of the kidney transplant program.
