What to do this week
Brussels sprouts are ripe for picking when they measure about an inch in diameter. Harvest the sprouts as soon as you can,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as the flavour deteriorates the longer they're left on the plant.
Start from the bottom of the plant,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], working your way up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], removing any yellowing leaves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which encourage diseases such as grey mould and Botrytis cinerea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and which in turn reduce the eventual crop yield.
Although they don't respond well to prolonged refrigeration, sprouts can be successfully frozen. Blanch them first in boiling water, drop them into ice-cold water for three to four minutes, then drain and store in freezer bags.
CARE FOR ALPINES
Alpines, a group which includes gentians,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sempervivums and saxifrages, are extremely tolerant of cold weather but hate getting waterlogged, which can lead to rot.
So clear fallen leaves from alpine beds to prevent dampness and fungal diseases; and keep off the worst of the rain - while still allowing air to circulate - by covering with a cloche and placing large stones or bricks on either side of the pots to secure a layer of thick,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], clear plastic over the plants.
High autumn winds wreak havoc with climbers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wrenching the plant from the wall and causing it to collapse, so take evasive action by tying in any long, whippy shoots.
Remember also that roses flower better when tied in horizontally rather than vertically. If there isn't room on the wall or fence to tie in shoots,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], do some judicious pruning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cutting stems back to the lowest three or four buds.
