Willie Parker had a pretty short tenure as the Redskins' newest big-name offensive addition. I mean, the dude didn't even get one full weekday to enjoy those spoils. Plus, with McNabb and Johnson to choose from,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's gonna be tough to move a lot of Parker burgundy and gold jerseys for a while.
Anyhow, Parker was on 106.7 Friday evening to discuss signing with the Skins,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and in the course of the interview he talked about the strengths of Washington's three big-name backs.
"We all have different styles of running," Parker said. "Clinton Portis, he's a great pass protector. That's something I always admired him about. is a hard runner. And the way I run the ball is totally different. I'm more of like a seam runner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like a change-of-pace style running back. So with those guys on my side, man, I only can get better,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], be a better pass protector and be a harder runner, and I think that'll benefit the team. You've got to go back and just think about what it'll do for the Washington Redskins."
"Clinton Portis is a great pass protector," huh? Dude also has a lot more rushing yards than the other two men. "And I think me coming to Washington with Clinton Portis and with Larry Johnson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], two great running backs, I mean, it's only gonna better myself and better them also with this competition.
"The only reason why you play this game is to win a championship, and that's what we've got to do. I mean, I'm in a different colored jersey now, and I'm definitely gonna bring that excitement and joy to the team."
Parker said the injuries that have dogged him the past two years were not because of his advancing age,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but rather because he had changed his offseason routine.
"I kind of went back to that this offseason,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], working out with my trainer, getting my body back right," he said. "And that's the thing that I got away from and I ended up injured and not playing as much, not taking the load, not getting the bulk of the carries in Pittsburgh. But I'm back, my body is healthy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I'm back to 100 percent and I'm just ready for whatever lies ahead of me. I got kind of on track this offseason and kind of woke up and pretty much told myself I can't take it for granted."
And like everyone else in the universe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Parker said he's always admired the offensive scheme of Mike Shanahan.
"I'm a zone runner, I love the zone play,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "That's where I get the bulk of my yards. People always look at me as a slasher, that I get my yards outside. Pretty much the zone play, you can set up outside plays with that play, so I love that. I love his scheme. And when we had our talk a couple weeks back I told him I love his scheme,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I love what he brings to the table,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and hopefully we can get something worked out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I'm glad we did.
