A job worth an eyetooth
To land his "breakthrough role," all Aaron Poole had to do was sacrifice a front tooth and lose 30 pounds.
But the 2007 role as a crack addict named Johnny in This Beautiful City paid off big time. Poole,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 32, won an ACTRA Best Actor award, a Gemini nomination and caught the attention of Canadian artiste and filmmaker Atom Egoyan.
2 yrs later, Poole is a regular in 2 Canadian-made television series, has roles in two films expected to premiere in 2010 and can shoot another film the coming year written by former Canadian Idol contestant Sebastian Pigott called The Two Deaths of Henry Baker.
Three hours a day of cardio and no fat as well as the lack of his maxillary lateral incisor - it had been actually a crown - was worth the sacrifice.
The graduate of the Etobicoke School of the Arts and George Brown College's theatre program could not be busier.
"In some people's eyes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it (the role of Johnny) helped legitimize me and it's helped in other occupations," Poole said.
It also led to an ongoing friendship with Egoyan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a little role in his film Adoration, and two other film shoots: an experimental project in Armenia and a film called Circumstance, shot in Beirut last summer by Maryam Keshavarz, a buddy of Egoyan's, that could end up premiering at the Sundance Film Festival.
Egoyan said he was "riveted" by Poole's work in This Beautiful City, adding he is "possessed of the great sensitivity and it is truly magnetic onscreen."
But it is also helped immensely that Poole hasn't waited for that work arrive at him. He was also co-producer and story editor with this Beautiful City, directed by Ed Gass-Donnelly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who also directed Poole in Small Town Murder Scenes, shot earlier this year in Listowel, Ont.,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and starring Jill Hennessy (Law Order,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Crossing Jordan) and Peter Stormare (Fargo).
Fresh from George Brown,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Poole did the typical budding actor thing: auditioning for small roles in theatre, TV and commercials.
"(But) I realized I wanted to accept bull through the horns and start helping to create my very own work because I wasn't satisfied with that which was available," Poole said.
Another sideline for Poole is really as an independent script reader for Telefilm Canada,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an important funder of new Canadian works,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], employment he did through the fall.
"You understand how it is, you need to hustle. You have to keep a lot of balls in the air,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], otherwise you're unemployed. It is the type of problem you want,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Poole said.
Throughout every season, Poole has had recurring roles in two TV series being shot in Hamilton,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Crash Burn and Residing in Your Car,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that is set to premiere in 2010 on TMN.
The opportunity to work in Beirut required having his character prepared of the final two instances of Crash Burn,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a decision he admitted ruefully would be a tough one.
"I'm not dead (within the series). I might be dead to them. We're gaining knowledge from the cooler cousin, but we're also finding our own legs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], our own a feeling of identity," he explained.
